Characteristics of Dry Skin and Its Causes

Dry skin is often dehydrated, rough, feels tight, and appears flaky with the expression lines. It happens because the skin loses water and fatty acids that nourish and maintain its protective barrier.

Several factors cause dry skin, including genetics, seasonal changes, humidity, excessive washing, harsh chemicals, and irritants. In addition, environmental pollutants and climatic conditions, such as very cold or hot temperatures, affect the skin's natural state.

Use Lukewarm Water for Washing

Hot water is the real enemy of dry skin. It can strip your skin of natural oils, leading to more dryness, flaking, and itching. So it is best to avoid it and use lukewarm water instead for showering or washing your face.

Choose a Gentle Cleanser

Cleansing is the first step to removing impurities clogged in pores and adding nourishing ingredients and moisture to the skin. First, choose a cream or oil-based formula for dry skin. It will assist in keeping your skin soft and hydrated while removing dirt, bacteria, and other impurities. Ingredients that are good for dry skin include lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and natural oils like avocado or jojoba oil. Avoid glycolic acid and salicylic acid products because they reduce natural oil production and further dry skin, creating more irritation, cracking, and redness.

Use Hydrating Serums

After cleansing, layer on a hydrating serum for extra moisture surge. It will help to stay your skin protected against environmental aggressors like pollution. Hyaluronic acid is one of the best moisturizing ingredients you should look for in serum to treat dry skin. Squalane, Ceramides, Plant oils, and extracts, vitamin C, are also beneficial for dry skin.

Moisturize & Protect Your Skin with SPF

Lock in moisture with a lightweight moisturizer. It should be rich in fortifying ingredients that deeply penetrate the skin barrier. A moisturizer's ideal components for dry skin are hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, and niacinamide. They will help to keep your skin soft, smooth, and plump.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin against the damaging effects of UV rays. If you prefer minimal skincare, choose a moisturizer with an SPF that combines sun protection and hydrating benefits.

Exfoliate Regularly

Don't be afraid of exfoliating dry skin. It is a simple approach to getting rid of flaky skin. Use gentle chemical exfoliating agents like mandalic acid or lactic acid once or twice a week. They effectively remove dry and dead skin cells and reveal a healthy and glowing complexion.

Avoid harsh sulfates (like SLS/SLES) in cleansers, which strip away essential oils, and denatured or isopropyl alcohols that rapidly dehydrate the surface. It is also wise to steer clear of synthetic fragrances and high concentrations of salicylic or glycolic acids, as these can cause further irritation and peeling on already parched skin.

For specific restorative agents. Look for humectants like Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin, which pull moisture into the skin, and barrier-repairing Ceramides that act as the "mortar" between skin cells to prevent water loss. Nourishing emollients such as Shea ButterSqualane, and Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) are also vital for smoothing texture and boosting natural lipid production.

Finally and as important as anything you do, It is crucial to hydrate your body to prevent excessive skin dryness. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, including water and fresh juices. Eating watermelons, oranges, muskmelons, cucumbers, and tomatoes also aid in maintaining optimum body hydration. Limit your caffeine consumption as it can lead to skin flaking and dryness.
