5 Compelling Reasons to Use Sunscreen Every Day
The sun is amazing for our health. In small doses, sunlight on our skin produces vitamin D, which can strengthen our immune system, improve our mood, and help us sleep better. 5-15 minutes of sunlight on our skin every day is enough to produce these incredible health benefits. However, there is a downside. Too much sun can have a detrimental effect on our skin and lead to issues such as premature aging and melanoma and is no way to create beauty.
Because of this, it’s important to wear sunscreen on your face every day, even during the winter. If you do nothing else for your skin, you will be thankful you added sunscreen to your daily beauty: routine! Here are 5 reasons to start enjoying the benefits of sunscreen today:
Sunscreen prevents signs of aging
All skin types need to be protected from the sun, including melanin skin. It’s a common misconception that melanin skin is protected from skin damage, but that unfortunately, is not true. Left unprotected, it is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation, skin cancer, and faster aging. This is the main reason that melanin skin is more prone to aging; it tends to not be as protected with sunscreen, leaving it more vulnerable to sun damage.
Your skin contains essential proteins such as keratin, collagen and elastin. Damage from the sun will weaken these proteins, causing them to break down and develop into premature wrinkles, dark spots, and saggy skin in every skin type. Many skincare products will help correct these issues, but it’s more effective to prevent them in the first place with daily sun protection!
Sunscreen lowers your risk of cancer
Your skin is always subject to the effects of UV rays, and even when it’s cloudy, melanoma can develop. In fact, not even windows in a house or car protect from all UV rays, which is why it’s important to wear it every day, whether you are spending time in direct sunlight or not.
Sunscreen prevents discoloration
Melasma is the darkening of patches of skin caused by an excess of melanin. While it is reversible to a degree, it’s much easier to prevent it than to treat it. Wearing sunscreen every day protects your cells from overproducing melanin as a defense mechanism.
Sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays
Let’s talk about tanning for a second. After all, who doesn’t love that sun-kissed glow in the summer?
Tanning itself isn’t the problem, and is not harmful to your skin; a tan is actually the formation of melanin in your cells in an attempt to protect them from more harmful UVB rays.
The problem is that while UVA rays are weaker, and penetrate to the deeper levels of your skin, UVB rays are stronger and can do damage to the surface skin cells, causing sunburns and possibly lasting damage.
Sunscreen enhances your skin’s overall health
It’s easy to find reasons not to want to wear sunscreen; it often smells strong, leaves a greasy feel, and affects the way makeup stays on our skin.
Thankfully, facial sunscreens have come a long way in recent years!
For many skincare companies, sunscreen isn’t just sunscreen anymore, but a blend of beneficial ingredients to improve your skin’s overall health. Some, like our Ultra Replenishing Sunscreen, are packed with skin loving ingredients that will nourish and protect your skin.
When choosing a sunscreen, be warned that some sun blocking ingredients are more harmful than helpful. For a safe and effective sunscreen, look for these ingredients: Titanium Dioxide, Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Avobenzone or Zinc Oxide. Make sure to apply your sunscreen at least half an hour before exposure to the sun. If you are wearing other skincare products, apply the sunscreen last.
